Dutch GBIF data online in NARCIS, the national academic research portal
22 / 12 / 2015, DANS
The Dutch national scientific portal NARCIS continues to grow and now provides access to the open biodiversity data published online by the Dutch organisations that participate in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
NARCIS stands for "National Academic Research and Collaborations Information System" and is the national portal for those seeking information about scientists and their work. NARCIS is maintained and hosted by DANS (Data Archiving and Networked Services). DANS promotes sustained access to digital research sources and is an institute established and financed by the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) and the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
The Dutch GBIF data presented in NARCIS show the information on the datasets at the level of metadata with links to the original data in the GBIF portal. NARCIS provides in itself information to other networks such OpenAire and WorldWideScience.org. Through this network function, the Dutch GBIF data are also accessible via different routes and networks, while the data owners have to publish their data only once.
The results of this project are based on the successfull cooperation between NLBIF, DANS and GBIF. GBIF data visible in NARCIS are provided by the OAI-PMH services (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) on the GBIF index database developed by GBIF based on NLBIF guidelines and directions.
