A new boost for Dutch freshwater data in GBIF

03 / 03 / 2015, NLBIF

Two major Dutch freshwater datasets expanded with several hundred thousand of new records.

Freshwater monitoring data of regional water management bodies, assembled in the database Limnodata Neerlandica by the Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research, are online available since the early days of NLBIF / GBIF and freely accessible to the national and international research community. With regular intervals the database is being improved and expanded by Royal HaskoningDHV, the technical host of the database. In the beginning of 2015 two additional sampling years (2011 and 2012) were added to the database increasing the total number of monitoring data with more than 300.000 records bringing the total number up to 3.3. million records. Also the taxonomic information was improved as well as the information on the sampling localities. The data were sampled over a period of more than 30 years by many organisations which is resembled in the consistency of the data. Still, this dataset bears unique characteristics and is a major source of information for European and international freshwater research. This is reflected in the GBIF user statistics of the dataset.

Piscaria, of the Royal Dutch Angling Association, is another dataset dating from the early days of GBIF / NLBIF. Also this dataset has been expanded and over 80.000 Dutch fish records were added, bringing the total number up to over 450.000 records.
