Registration of organisations and datasets in GBIF

An important service provided by GBIF and NLBIF is the registration of institutions and organisations as data owners in an international context. GBIF is the only international organisation providing data owners with an international UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier) in a durable and structured way. Each dataset also receives an own UUID, technical installations are also given a UUID.

The UUIDs make it possible to connect data and organisations, particularly within digital information networks. The UUIDs are not only used by and in GBIF but also in other primarily international biodiversity initiatives.

Registered organisations and datasets can be found in the GBIF data portal. NLBIF registers data sets not only with GBIF, but also optionally in national registration systems such as NARCIS, an academic information system used by all Dutch universities and research institutes.
