First version Atlas European Breeding Birds online available through GBIF

28 / 12 / 2015

In cooperation with the Dutch organisation Sovon, NLBIF has facilitated the publication of the first pan- European bird dataset in GBIF.

Observations and counts of the European breeding birds, brought together by the "European Bird Census Council" (EBCC), constitute the data for the first European breeding bird atlas (EBBA1), an absolute standard reference work and an achievement unique to Europe. The atlas presents the coverage of European breeding birds in a grid of 50 x 50 kilometres, including information on the certainty of successful breeding efforts per grid and an estimation of the number of successful breeding pairs. The data underlying the atlas were gathered in the eighties and nineties of the last century.

A new version of the Breeding Bird Atlas is in the making (EBBA2), the online data of the first atlas can act as a reference for the many national bird data collecting organizations involved in the new atlas.
