Scuba enthusiasts share data with GBIF

25 / 11 / 2013, GBIF

Thousands of citizen science observations of marine and freshwater species are now accessible to everyone through GBIF.

Global initiative Diveboard, a platform for underwater sports enthusiasts, makes no less than 15,000 data records available through the electronic logbooks Diveboard members use. Records originate from many different locations, including the waters of Zeeland. The initiative has its roots in Belgium.

The usefulness of Diveboard data has already been proved and, for example, shows how the invasive lionfish (Pterais spp), from the Indo-Pacific region, continues its damaging advance in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic coral reefs. The Diveboard data are supplied by the organisation itself through the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT). It is one of the first data sets in GBIF that makes use of the real-time indexing facilities provided by the GBIF portal.
