Sovon Dutch Centre for Ornithology organises national bird surveys to benefit management, policy and science. With these surveys, Sovon annually charts the state of Dutch birds. Besides coordinating this kind of descriptive research (monitoring birds), Sovon carries out explanatory research attempting to elucidate trends in bird populations.

Sovon aims to increase and transfer knowledge and to support nature policy, conservation and management. At all times, Sovon aims to manifest itself as an independent and objective organization. Sovon’s core values are: reliability, objectivity, expertise and orientation towards practical application.

Sovon stimulates and supports systematic field research by volunteers, often in collaboration and in tune with other organisations. Sovon owns an enormous quantity of validated bird data. These data are accessible through the National Data Bank Flora and Fauna (NDFF), for NDFF subscription holders, or on demand.
