Data from GBIF are mainly used by scientists, for their research. GBIF publishes an overview of scientific articles in which GBIF data are used.
Additionally, GBIF data are used for national and international policies in the fields of climate, nature conservation and spatial planning. GBIF data are also essential for education at the academic level.
GBIF data are open data, standardised and validated, and are readily available through the local GBIF nodes and the central GBIF portal. The data are also increasingly becoming available through other channels.
For instance, the data from the Dutch water boards can be downloaded directly from the NLBIF data interface (IPT), along with standardised metadata. The same data are searchable through the GBIF portal. Here, data can also be filtered by date, species name and many other attributes.
